Nostos

“We look at the world once in childhood.

The rest is memory”

-Louise Glück

In the photographic series Nostos — from the ancient Greek word meaning “return home,” or “return to one’s homeland” — the photographer revisits, thirty years later, the now-abandoned place where she used to spend the summers of her childhood. Although some of the people who once brought the estate to life have passed away, she discovers that nature has quietly reclaimed the space, creating a unique, untouched ecosystem.

As she wanders again through familiar places, she stumbles upon animal remains and rotting fruit, coming face to face with memories of family holidays, summer idleness, games, and the carefree spirit of childhood.

Through contemporary photographs, archival material, and video stills, Nostos speaks to the power of childhood memories and the unbroken cycle of life, in which humans and nature are born and die, inextricably linked through the passage of time.
